Adley’s 1st birthday cake smash session was the sweetest way to celebrate such a big milestone. Her mother chose a pink and bows theme for this indoor studio session and from there I gathered all the items needed to bring this vision to life! I love when milestone sessions feel simple but joyful, and this setup turned out beautifully with balloons, soft textures, and a little bit of birthday magic.

Behind the scenes, I may or may not have blown up a lot of balloons to make the set come together. I also added a few weaved lights from Amazon to give the backdrop a soft glow and make the whole scene feel a little extra special on camera. And yes — I did in fact spend most of the session laying on the floor playing peek-a-boo to get those big smiles and curious reactions. If there’s one thing about photographing one-year-olds, it’s that you have to fully commit to the moment… even if that means crawling around on the floor to make them laugh.

The highlight, of course, was when AdLey finally dug into her cake. At first she carefully explored the frosting, but it didn’t take long before the fun began and the adorable cake smash moments followed. First birthday sessions like this are some of my favorites to photograph because they capture so much personality — the curiosity, the giggles, and the joy that comes with celebrating an entire year of growth.
